A Message from President Josephine Libassi

As we approach a three day weekend in honor of Veteran's Day, it is appropriate to thank all Veterans, especially our MITA member Veterans, on this occasion, for their service.

Your TRS delegates (Terry D'Andrea, Lia Maniaci, Brian Lehayne and myself) attended the annual NYSTRS conference this past weekend in Saratoga NY.  We attended a number of informative seminars regarding our TRS pension benefit and related topics such as Social Security and some common legal issues connected to retirement planning.

If you are a new member, there is information specifically for you as your start your career in education that can help you plan for a very comfortable retirement.

NYSUT continues to lead the way in lobbying for changes to Tier 6, but TRS has to plan for it the way it is currently written, and have provided some helpful information for our newest members.

The fall NYSTRS Retirement PREP meeting schedule is attached here, these are an excellent opportunity to meet with TRS staff in person and get answers directly from them about the retirement process.

There is a Long Island PREP seminar scheduled for Weds Nov 29th in Plainview. You can register here, they fill up quickly so register asap if you'd like to attend. Pension & Retirement Education Program (PREP) | NYSTRS

Of course one of the things they stressed at the conference was how important it is for each and every member to register for their MyNYSTRS account. This is your personal portal to TRS. You can use the pension estimator to crunch numbers and assist in planning your retirement, even if you are planning early and have many years to go. The more you know about the process and what you can realistically expect as a pension benefit, the more accurate your planning will be!

You should receive a Benefits Profile in the next few weeks, if you have a MyNYSTRS account, you may have received it in an email already!
